Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, is believed to be the ninth avatar of Vishnu. The inclusion of the teacher of a heterodox sect that was critical of the Brahmanical religion in the Vishnu pantheon often surprises people.
The inclusion of the Buddha as an avatar is in fact a continuation of
an old tradition of absorbing and redefining any cult or belief that
rose to challenge the mainstream Hindu system. It had begun with the
Dravidina Shiva, when the Puranas claimed him as a god and continued
with the evolution of the Mother Goddess and local cults around the
worship of snakes and monkeys.

What is most intriguing about the surprising choice of the Buddha as an
avatar is the way myths were created to justify his inclusion, in spite
of the fact that his teachings were critical of the role of the
priesthood and of the caste system. It also reflects the Hindu
tradition of worship whatever is good on this earth. A simple
tolerance that makes them pray at Sufi shrines and go on pilgrimages on
Urs festivals. It is this generous ability to absorb and transform that
made Gautama Buddha an avatar of Vishnu.
